ABS and UWILD

IDS offers the most cost-effective ABS UWILD inspection availaible.

UWILD [“Underwater Inspection in Lieu of Dry-docking”], an alternative to dry-docking inspection, is carried out by an ABS-approved* diver under the watch of an attending surveyor and includes all items normally examined if the vessel were dry-docked.

This inspection of the entire vessel [below the waterline] by a diver [using a closed circuit TV with two-way communications] typically reports on the following:

  • Time at which the dive commences
  • Point of commencement
  • Time viewed
  • Conditions of hull markings
  • Random areas of plating
  • All sea chests
  • All inlets and discharges
  • Rudder
  • Pintles
  • Propeller
  • Time and point of completion of the dive

This exam is supplemented by the inspecting diver’s report. A copy of this report, along with pictures, is submitted to the attending Surveyor. Copies are also retained onboard the vessel.

*Since 1862, the mission of the American Bureau of Shipping [ABS] has been to promote maritime safety through the security of life, property and the natural environment.
